By 1846 almost 1,000 mining permits had been issued. This early copper rush was over by 1847, and by the 1870s shipping "around the point" declined because of the opening of the Portage Lake Ship Canal further south between Houghton and Hancock. Today several of the former mining sites are popular tourist attractions. The property borders on US Highway 41, almost at its northern end.
