| History: | Named for Father Johann Bernard Weikamp (1818-1889), who purchased land adjacent to the lake for the establishment of a Franciscan convent. The variant name Spirit Lake refers to a historical meeting site of the Odawa Indians. A proposal to change the name Wycamp Lake to Spirit Lake was rejected by the Board on Geographic Names (BGN) in 2009. |
